Leg 4 of the EXXpedition Voyage Discussed

We were pleased to recently have Julie Andersen, our Global Executive Director, join Lori Lundin for an interview on Voice of America Asia. It aired on Christmas Eve, December 24, including on the international edition. The topic of discussion was Julie’s participation in Leg 4 of the eXXpedition voyage, which is an around-the-world all-female sailing trip to investigate the causes of, and solutions to ocean plastic pollution.

Q & A with Filmmaker Sara Newton

Sara Newton is a force of nature. She has travelled the world and has had a career track that most wouldn’t believe. She is the writer, director, and producer of Big Litter Ocean, a mockumentary that takes a satirical and dry-witted look at the problem of plastic pollution in our oceans. Plastic Oceans International is proud to present this short film that reminds us all to not take ourselves too seriously and to do our best to #begood. We had a chance to talk with her recently about all things Sara Newton and this is the result:

Q&A with Director Bruce Buttery

Bruce Buttery has worked in the realm of independent film since 1998. He has been a cameraman, designer, editor, producer and director of photography. He’s worked on dozens of projects, including as the director and creative force behind the short film Sea Change, which is a beautifully shot documentary that chronicles South African surfer, entrepreneur and eco-warrior, John McCarthy, and his realization that his passion for surfing was not sustainable for the ocean he feels a deep connection to.

Sarah Ferguson Interviewed by Ethan Bearman on San Francisco’s KGO

South African endurance swimmer, Sarah Ferguson, recently joined Ethan Bearman on KGO 810 in San Francisco to talk about her world-record attempt to become the first person to swim around Easter Island. Sarah is the founder of Breathe Ocean Conservation and serves as an Ambassador for Plastic Oceans International.

Creativity In Action – The Filmmakers of ‘Birthplace’

Meet the Creative Visionaries Behind the New Novo Amor Video

We are excited to continue our initiative to bring the value of creativity to the forefront, showcasing it as a powerful tool in our efforts to raise awareness on the issue of plastic pollution, to inspire action and to create meaningful change.

Earlier this week we had the pleasure of publishing an engaging interview with Welshman and musical savant, Ali Lacey, best known as Novo Amor. The release of the video for his song Birthplace has garnered a great deal of attention among music fans and those who have a passion for protecting our oceans from plastic pollution.

Today we turn our attention to filmmakers Sil van der Woerd and Jorik Dozy, the visionary creatives behind the Birthplace.

For decades, art and other forms of creative expression have served as powerful forms of dissent and protest on any number of social and political issues.

We can look to Picasso’s “Guernica” painting, which was based on the Spanish Civil War and captured its atrocities and inhumanity, serving as an inspiration for the modern human rights movement. To Diego Rivera’s powerful murals that spoke out in support of the working class. The Civil Rights photography of Gordon Parks. And today you can certainly get your fill of protest through the street art of Banksy; the eclectic creative output of Chinese dissident, Ai Wei Wei; or the music performances of Pussy Riot.
